Today is Autism Awareness Day; April is Autism Awareness Month

Autism affects more children than juvenile diabetes, childhood cancer and Down syndrome combined. Plus more children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes & cancer combined.

I find these facts amazing! Furthermore, this does NOT include the number of adults with autism!!

Did you know…

  • 1 in 150 children is diagnosed with autism
  • 1 in 94 boys is on the autism spectrum
  • 67 children are diagnosed per day
  • A new case is diagnosed almost every 20 minutes
  • More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes & cancer combined
  • Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S.
  • Autism costs the nation over $90 billion per year, a figure expected to double in the next decade
  • Autism receives less than 5% of the research funding of many less prevalent childhood diseases
  • Boys are four times more likely than girls to have autism
  • There is no medical detection or cure for autism

Incidence vs. Private Funding

  • Leukemia: Affects 1 in 25,000 / Funding: $310 million
  • Muscular Dystrophy: Affects 1 in 20,000 / Funding: $175 million
  • Pediatric AIDS: Affects 1 in 8,000 / Funding: $394 million
  • Juvenile Diabetes: Affects 1 in 500 / Funding: $130 million
  • Autism: Affects 1 in 150 / Funding: $15 million

National Institutes of Health Funds Allocation

  • Total 2005 NIH budget: $29 billion
  • Of this, only $100 million goes towards autism research. This represents 0.3% of total NIH funding.

The international symbol for autism is a puzzle piece, signifying the mystery of this disorder. The puzzle pattern reflects the mystery and complexity of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The different colors and shapes represent the diversity of the individuals (and their families) effected. The brightness of the colors symbolizes hope - through research, increased awareness, understanding and acceptance.

Autism smautism.

1 in 4 people live in hunger.
15,000,000 children die of hunger yearly.
In the 1990s more than 100,000,000 died from starvation.
1 in 12 people worldwide are malnourished.
1 in 6 elderly people in the US are malnourished.
1 in 8 children in the US will go today without a meal.

It's easy to list of facts in attempt to elevate the importance of your cause - this whole post seems a bit beneath your intelligence mother - you can do better.

You should start writing a book about being a mother of an autistic child now while it's still fresh on your memory - the intricacies of learning their specific method of communication and attempts to delve into their universe in order to reach a profound understanding of their struggles in order to help them. In fact - you could even blog about book writing as you go! You've been very involved in Josh's development and while he still has a long ways to go - you don't have a lot of free time so by the time you caught up to where you are now in the book writing process - he'll be into his 20s :-)

Think about it.

Not to mention it seems like a copy/ paste straight from an e-mail... a little personal fact checking suggests the 15mil$ figure represents the government's funding and doesn't show private / donation funded figures... though Bush DID veto a bill that would have tripled the government spending on the topic.

Also notable is recent information suggests that when properly treated - autistic children are able to overcome the majority of learning disabilities to reach a mostly independent lifestyle, and moderately autistic children are able to achieve a normal day to day lifestyle.

You also might want to read this article in order to learn about some new lawmaking that you had problems with when Josh wasn't being covered by health insurance: http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/conditions/04/01/autism.insurance/index.html

Love,
Michael, your son who has a stupid desire to study and keep up to date on EVERY subject known to man, and can fact list and break out trivia on any subject... but can not STAND his studies being "guided" so tightly by college coursework... the son who has scraped 2 books now in fears of the retaliation on his political aspirations. :-(

.... who is also awake at 6:42am on a day he has a 9:00, 10:30, 12:30 with 2 lectures to attend at 3:30 and 7:00... and a 1 page synopsis to write on both... it's hard to fit all this classwork in between my hunger for absurdly useless fact gathering.

side note:

word count of your blog: 276
word count of my comment: 427

That's 1.54347x as many words, or whatever.

... I should psuedo-blog exploring exponentialism from a apatheticism mindsight.... of a female living in Russia who lived under the USSR and went to school at Hofstra U ... liberal arts perhaps?

... hmm.

people usually reply to blog comments by commenting on the person's blog.

eg: you want to reply to leann - comment on her blog. you want to reply to me, comment on my blog.

Michael, Michael, Micha Moo
Sweetheart, understand a major piece of Austim was keeping me from a better post and I did the best I could on a subject at the time!

Furthermore, the 15mil$ figure WAS private funding. We ALL know what Bush thinks of Autism.
HE LEFT THEM IN NEW ORLEANS TO DIE!!!

BTW, This is NOT every subject known to man. This is a subject in your family, and I DO expect you to know about it!

Moreover, BUSH LEFT THOSE HUNGRY PEOPLE TO DIE!
So much for Christian values!!!
